Most local SEO advice assumes you have one address. The moment you have twelve, the rules change: your locations start competing with each other, your Google Business Profiles drift out of sync, and the location pages your developer generated from a template get treated as doorway pages.
We build multi-location SEO programmes for brands running 5 to 500 locations across the United States, United Kingdom and Canada — the architecture, the profile management, and the measurement that keeps every location visible without cannibalising the others.

Why Multi-Location SEO Breaks at Scale
Single-location SEO is a ranking problem. Multi-location SEO is an architecture problem wearing a ranking problem’s clothes. Three failures account for most of it.
Template collapse. Location pages generated from one template with the city name swapped in are near-duplicates. Google classifies them as doorway pages and indexes a fraction. Ten locations become three indexed pages, and nobody notices until traffic plateaus.
Internal cannibalisation. Two locations in the same metro target the same phrase. Google picks one, suppresses the other, and the suppressed location’s paid budget quietly starts covering for organic that never arrives.
NAP drift. Name, address and phone data enters from the POS system, the franchise directory, the old agency’s citation build and three aggregators. Within a year the same location exists in four contradictory forms, and Google’s confidence in all of them drops.
None of these are fixed by publishing more content. They are fixed by structure — which is why we start every engagement with an audit rather than a content calendar.
Location Page Architecture and URL Structure
The structural decision that matters most is where location pages live. There are three options and they are not equivalent.
| Approach | Structure | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subdirectory | brand.com/locations/austin/ | Almost every multi-location brand | Consolidates authority to one domain. The default choice. |
| Subdomain | austin.brand.com | Genuinely autonomous regional businesses | Splits authority; each subdomain earns trust separately. |
| Separate domain | brandaustin.com | Franchisees who legally own their marketing | Highest cost, weakest compounding, hardest to govern. |
For the overwhelming majority of brands the answer is subdirectories. You are building one authoritative domain, not fifty weak ones. We migrate brands off subdomain and separate-domain setups regularly, and the consolidation is usually the single largest ranking event of the year.
Beneath that, each location page needs enough unique substance to justify its own URL: location-specific services, staff, parking and transit detail, genuine local photography, embedded map, structured LocalBusiness data, and reviews specific to that location. If your pages differ only by city name, you do not have location pages — you have one page and a find-and-replace.

Google Business Profile Management Across Locations
Above roughly ten locations, GBP stops being a marketing task and becomes an operations one.
We run profile management as a governed system: bulk upload and verification via the location group, a locked category taxonomy so location 34 does not invent its own primary category, scheduled posts and photo refreshes, Q&A seeding, and review response SLAs by location.
The management layer matters more than any individual optimisation. A brand with 80 locations and no governance will have 80 different interpretations of what the business does. Google reads that inconsistency as low confidence, and low confidence shows up as map pack absence.
Competing in One City With Multiple Locations
This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is that you cannot fully prevent it — you can only direct it.
Google will rank one result per query per user location in most local contexts. Two branches four miles apart will be filtered against each other. What works:
- Differentiate by service, not just geography. If the downtown clinic does paediatrics and the north branch does sports medicine, the pages should be genuinely different documents.
- Target the neighbourhood, not the city. “Physiotherapy in Southbank” beats a second page competing for “physiotherapy in Melbourne” against your own first page.
- Let proximity do its job. Map pack results are heavily distance-weighted. Two well-built profiles in one city serve two catchments — that is the system working, not failing.
- Consolidate where locations genuinely overlap. Occasionally the right answer is fewer, stronger pages. We will tell you when that is the case.
What Multi-Location SEO Costs
Multi-location SEO is not priced per page or per keyword. Four things actually drive what an engagement costs:
- Location count. The jump from 5 to 50 locations changes the work from manual optimisation to governed bulk operations.
- Market competition. Twenty locations across three major metros is harder than two hundred across low-competition regional towns.
- Starting condition. A clean NAP footprint and verified profiles cost far less to grow than a decade of citation drift and duplicate listings.
- Whether location pages already exist. Rebuilding a templated set is a different project from optimising a well-structured one.
Cost scales with footprint and competition, not with agency headcount. See our packages for current plans, or send us your location count and we will price the actual footprint.
Multi-Location SEO for Franchises, Clinics, Gyms and Recruitment
Franchises. The hard part is governance, not tactics. Franchisees run their own profiles and publish their own pages, and brand consistency erodes from the edges. We build the templates, the rules and the reporting the franchisor uses to keep the network coherent.
Clinics and healthcare. Practitioner-level entities, insurance and service-line pages, and E-E-A-T requirements stricter than any other vertical. Each practitioner needs to exist as a resolvable entity, not a name in a staff grid.
Gyms and studios. Ferociously proximity-driven and class-schedule dependent. Neighbourhood targeting and review velocity carry more weight here than content volume.
Recruitment firms. Two overlapping location layers — where offices are, and where roles are. Confusing the two produces thin pages at scale. The structure has to separate them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you do local SEO for multiple locations in one city?
Differentiate each page by neighbourhood and service rather than repeating the city name. Give each location a distinct Google Business Profile with accurate categories and its own reviews. Proximity filtering means both locations can serve their own catchment without directly competing.
How much does multi-location SEO cost?
Cost is driven by location count, market competition, the condition of your existing NAP footprint, and whether location pages already exist. A five-location brand in one regional market sits at the opposite end of the range from a fifty-location network across major metros. See our packages page for current plans.
How do you manage multiple locations in Moz Local?
Use a single Moz Local account with locations added under one business profile, then bulk upload via CSV with a unique store code per location. Each needs its own physical address — Moz rejects duplicates at the same address. Sync to aggregators once NAP is verified clean.
What is the best URL structure for multi-location SEO?
Subdirectories, in the form yourbrand.com/locations/city-name/. This consolidates authority onto one domain. Subdomains and separate domains split ranking signal across properties that each have to earn trust independently. Only use them where franchisees legally own their own marketing.
How long does it take a new location page to rank?
Typically 8 to 16 weeks for a competitive metro, faster in low-competition markets. Pages attached to a verified, active Google Business Profile with genuine reviews rank meaningfully sooner than pages published in isolation.
